Steinmetz, Charles Proteus, A.M. PhD, Elementary Lectures on Electric Waves, and Impulses, and other Transients, 2ed, McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, 1914.

In this volume Steinmetz successfully translates his more mathematical work into more accessible algebra and English. The introduction provides a picture of the state of the art in the 20th centurys second decade. Steinmetz's book reveals how transients were analyzed at the time. Power disruptions motivate a large percentage of the work. However, the circuit and transient methods contain significant substance for 21st-century electronics engineers.

Todays students often express concern about the tendency of modern textbook writers to use unexplained simplifications. In at least some cases (for instance the bottom of page 68 & top of page 69--screens 81 & 82) Steinmetz carefully warns the reader of cases where a simplification gives incorrect results.

In the case of 2nd order ordinary differential equations having solutions in the form of products, Steinmetz sometimes aids our visualization by graphing the factors and their product.

Steinmetzs mathematical derivations require very few leaps of faith or all-night struggles compared with recent circuit-analysis texts. Steinmetz explains the significance of each mathematical result, often with practical worked examples. While Steinmetz confines most of his cases to power transmission lines, the implications for antennas, switch-mode power converters, circuit-board layout, electromagnetic compatibility, and data transmission lines require only a little imagination.
